About This Kit

What this is

The DPC Startup Kit is a free reference for physicians starting or running a Direct Primary Care practice. It runs to about 140 pages: guides on entity choice, tax, pricing, technology, marketing, compliance and operations; a startup guide for every state; and spreadsheet and document templates. It is published under a Creative Commons BY-NC 4.0 license, so you may share and adapt it with attribution, but not sell it.

Who built it

The kit was put together by Jack Forbush, DO, a family physician who runs a DPC practice, with input from DPC colleagues, and is maintained alongside the DPC Mentor Platform, a volunteer-run service that pairs physicians considering DPC with physicians who have already made the move. Both are operated at no charge.

Independence

Nothing here is for sale, and nobody pays for placement.

  • No EMR vendor, website company, consultant or membership organization funds the kit or has editorial say in it.
  • Where a page names products, it names several and gives the tradeoffs. It does not endorse one.
  • Contributors must disclose any financial relationship with a product or company they mention, before their change is accepted. See Before you write.

How it is kept current

  • Pages that turn on law, tax or regulation are checked against the primary source, with each source linked at the claim. Those pages carry a "Reviewed" mark in the public review status file, with the reviewer's initials and the date.
  • Rules that expire or change on a schedule are shown with their date inside a "Subject to change" box, so you know when to look again.
  • Every change to every page is visible in the commit history.

How to help

Read a page and fix what is unclear. Check a law or tax page against its sources. Tell us what is missing. The contributing guide explains both the twenty-minute version and the full review, and no Git knowledge is needed for either.
